Transfo site,

Zwevegem – Belgium

Transfo, Een energieke locatie

The Transfo site in Zwevegem, located along the Bossuit–Kortrijk canal, is a 9-hectare former power plant site recognized as protected industrial heritage and officially listed as Open Heritage. Originally established in 1911 by the Société d’Électricité de l’Ouest de la Belgique, the site played a key role in supplying electricity to public infrastructure before ceasing production in 2001, and today still houses a unique collection of turbines and generators in its iconic machine hall.

Building on this rich history, Transfo is now home to an innovative pilot project featuring a local DC smart grid that integrates solar PV, CHP, batteries, and EV charging to enable a fully renewable energy system.

Key partners such as Intercommunale Leiedal, Fluvius and Ghent University have been involved from the outset, contributing to the development and evaluation of this innovative pilot.

Since autumn 2024, Circular has been appointed as the Energy manager, and is also supporting commissioning activities planned for spring 2026
